Product Description

The main characteristic of a torque converter is its ability to increase torque when the output speed is very low, allowing fluid from the curved blades of the turbine to be deflected away from the stator when locked with the one-way clutch, thus providing the equivalent of a reduction gear. This is a feature that goes beyond a simple fluid coupling, which matches revs but doesn't increase torque, thereby reducing power.

In a torque converter there are at least three rotating elements: the impeller, which is mechanically driven by the prime mover; the turbine, which drives the load; and the stator, which sits between the impeller and the turbine so it can vary the flow of oil from the turbine back to the impeller. The classic torque converter design stipulates that the stator cannot rotate under any circumstances, hence the name stator. In practice, however, the stator is mounted on an overrunning clutch, which prevents reverse rotation of the stator relative to the prime mover, but allows forward rotation.   Regular modifications are made to the basic three-element design, especially in applications requiring higher than normal torque multiplication. Most commonly, they take the form of multiple turbines and stators, each set designed to produce a different amount of torque multiplication. For example, the Buick Dynaflow automatic transmission is a non-shifting design that relies solely on the torque converter to increase torque under normal conditions. Dynaflow uses a five-element converter to generate the wide range of torque multiplication needed to propel heavy vehicles.  While not strictly a part of the classic torque converter design, many automotive torque converters include a lock-up clutch for more efficient cruising power transfer and less heat. Application of the clutch locks the turbine to the impeller, making all power transmission mechanical, eliminating losses associated with fluid drive.
